The continual programme of building and enriching their enclosures ensures that the animals have natural and stimulating habitats in which to thrive. Edinburgh Zoo offers an exciting programme of events throughout the year, and is open 365 days.
The best place to conserve wildlife is in the wild, but where this is impossible due to pollution, habitat destruction and hunting, zoos can play a vital role. Working in co-operation with other zoos and conservation organisations around the world, Edinburgh Zoo breeds and exchanges threatened species, keeping healthy and genetically diverse populations safe from extinction.
The Royal Zoological Society of Scotland is a registered charity, operating both Edinburgh Zoo and the Highland Wildlife Park at Kincraig, near Aviemore. Its aims are “to inspire and excite our visitors with the wonder of living animals, and so to promote the conservation of threatened species and habitats.”
